Latin name: Secale cereale var montanum
Family: Poaceae
Agronomic characteristics
This cereal resists very well to the cold and makes it possible to obtain a long ground cover, whatever the winter severity. The establishment of rye is quite easy but can be thwarted by its appetite for slugs. Its destruction is a little more difficult than for other cereals. There is a certain varietal diversity among winter ryes, in particular with early bolting cultivars capable of producing biomass early in the spring. There are more rarely spring ryes.
