20 Years of Continuous Innovation with Tropical Dent® Genetics
October 15, 2026
Discovered 20 years ago, this unique genetic line, patented by Lidea, marked a major scientific breakthrough in European corn breeding. Renowned for its high yield potential, stability and tolerance to water and heat stress, the Tropical Dent® genetic family has continued to evolve through three generations of corn hybrids, delivering high-performance, sustainable solutions to help farmers meet the challenges of climate change.
Lidea is celebrating two decades of an exceptional scientific and agronomic journey: the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the unique Tropical Dent® genetic family.
This genetic line was identified in 2006 by Lidea’s Research and Development teams as part of an innovation programme aimed at discovering new sources of heterosis (hybrid vigour) and breaking through the yield ceiling in Europe. This original genetic resource is entirely distinct from the standard groups available on the global market. Twenty years after its discovery – a milestone that paved the way for the registration of the first varieties – this exclusive genetic line remains one of Lidea’s key differentiators in the European seed market.

“In corn breeding, the biological principle of heterosis requires a high degree of genetic distance between the pure parental lines,” explained Laurent Bettinger, Head of Corn Research at Lidea. “Extensive work to collect and characterise genetic pools enabled us to identify this exclusive Tropical Dent® gene line. Lidea has developed a unique, patented heterosis model.”
By maximising heterosis, Tropical Dent® genetics produce plants with enhanced performance throughout the growing cycle. From the earliest stages of growth through flowering and right up to grain dry-down, every stage of the plant’s life cycle is improved.
Far from being static, the Tropical Dent® gene line is continuously improved to adapt to evolving farming practices and the demands of climate change:
Looking ahead to the coming sowing seasons, and with a longstanding awareness of the ongoing effects of climate change, Lidea is offering new Tropical Dent® varieties that build on the proven strengths of this unique genetic line, including tolerance to water stress. Varieties include Oklahoma and LID2214C in G2, LID3223C and LID3355C in G3, and LID4409C in G4.

“Today, the strong and enduring presence of Tropical Dent® varieties across Europe is the clearest evidence of the trust farmers place in us. Over the past five years, approximately 2.5 million hectares have been sown with Tropical Dent® corn varieties,” said Cédric Poeydomenge, Strategic Marketing Director at Lidea. “Since this exceptional genetic resource was discovered, more than 200 varieties have been registered in European markets. Our priority has always been to stay in touch with the realities on the ground. With a dynamic commercial portfolio of more than 30 varieties in 2026, covering the full range of maturity groups from Group 0 to Group 5, we offer corn growers tailored, high-performance solutions to secure the success of their farms.”

Further evidence of this success is reflected in the sustained institutional recognition Tropical Dent® varieties have received in official national variety catalogues. These include listings by CTPS in France, Bundessortenamt in Germany, UKZUZ in the Czech Republic, NEBIH in Hungary and COBORU in Poland, where Lidea’s genetics have achieved 29 first-place rankings.
In Poland – a key market for grain corn – Lidea ranks second, with Tropical Dent® hybrids accounting for one in every nine hectares planted with grain corn.
Twenty years after the discovery of this groundbreaking genetic line, Tropical Dent® continues to demonstrate its value, delivering proven field performance designed to last.
