The Covid situation seems to be behind us and it is now the latest news that is back in the limelight. Weather market aspects, often the result of La Niña, are now disrupting production throughout the world, whilst the consumption of vegetable oils in food and especially industry is at record highs. The buoyant demand is therefore boosting crush activity, but there are many concerns about seed supply for the end of the campaign.
If 2021 had more than its fair share of surprises, given the numerous concerns around the world, so could 2022! Beyond macroeconomic and Covid-related issues, note that stocks of wheat, maize and even barley are low in historical terms, leaving no room for a weather incident. Be they related to drought in Kansas, cold in Russia or drought in South America, concerns are starting to emerge on the plains which is bound to bring volatility to the markets.
