It often proves to be earlier in heading than spring oats. Being regularly in the process of bolting in winter, its stems freeze easily. If it is not advanced enough, tillers can start up again in the spring. It is much less susceptible than common oats to virus infections and crown rust. On average it produces more biomass than winter or spring oats (+ 15% biomass and + 37% nitrogen absorbed). It has a smaller TWK ​​than other oats, hence lower seeding rates. However, we must remain attentive to their destruction if they are moderately developed, especially before crops where no recovery is possible because the vetch can be invasive. The ability of the different vetch varieties to produce biomass can be very different from one variety to another. There is early and late hairy vetch varieties. Early varieties have an good biomass potential before the winter with frost sensibility (but never 100% frost kill). It is easier to destroy than other clovers, with variations depending on the variety. Its seed size explain its presence in many associations. It is a melliferous cover but with rather late flowering. On the variety side: Multi-cut varieties (producing several stems) tend to regrow after a cut, mechanical destruction or frost, this type is suitable for forage. Its strong sensitivity to frost is an asset for its destruction but makes it unsuitable for late sowing. It is a cover that is not very stuffy, well suited to associations. This cover is strictly not recommended in rotations or regions where sunflower is present (risk of multiplication of downy mildew). It is a good melliferous cover but with late flowering.
